Shiva exposed the hypocrisy of some sages by disguising himself as a young hermit and seducing them. The sages held him responsible for the temptation and threw a tiger, a snake and a goblin upon him. Shiva tore apart the tiger and wore its skin, wrapped the snake round his neck, and danced on the head of the Goblin. Symbolically he had not only tamed the ambition of the tiger, the passion of the snake and the ego of the goblin, He had liberated men from the illusion of 'self' by destroying their ignorance. The Dance was so mesmerizing that the Gods alighted from heaven and the demons emerged from their glittering world to
enjoy the rare spectacle. He came to be known as Nataraja. His dance was the cosmic truth, the rhythm of life and death.
