After the flood, many cosmic treasures sank deep into the ocean and there was race between the asuras (demons) and devas (gods) to churn the ocean for amrut (nectar for immortality). Vishnu took the form of Kurma (tortoise) and gave a base to Mount Mandara, while serpent Vasuki was threaded around for the churning. Fourteen treasures including amrut, appeared. |
VARAH

When demon king Hiranyakashyapu dragged Bhoomi Devi (Mother Earth) under water Vishnu appeared in the form of a Varah (Wild Boar), and after a fierce battle he lifted Mother Earth from under water, on his snout. He then dragged the land from the seabed and created the mountains and the rivers on the earth. |

NARSIMHA

The tyrannical demon king Hiranyakashyapu had tormented the world. He had a boon that he could not be killed either by man or beast, neither during the day or night, neither inside nor outside the Palace. Lord Vishnu appeared as 'Narsimha' (half lion and half human) at dusk from his Palace pillar and killed him using his claws. |
VAMAN

Bali, the virtuous king, was so successful that even the Gods felt threatened. Vishnu disguised as Vaman (Dwarf Brahmin) appeared before him and asked for three steps of land so that he could meditate. Bali agreed. Vishnu, using his supernatural powers, covered the earth and the heavens in his first two steps. Bali, known for his word, offered his head for the third step. |
